Polarimetric imaging based on a microgrid sensor : characterization and detection of errors due to spatial fluctuations

This thesis deals with the study of a recently developed polarimetric sensor that allows the analysis of the polarization state within a limited number of acquisitions. This sensor is able to carry out division of focal plane imaging (DoFP for ``Division of Focal Plane''). To do this, the different pixels of the sensor perform different analyses of the polarization state. This makes it possible to collect several different pieces of information on the polarization state within a single acquisition. As a drawback, the different information necessary for the analysis of the polarization at one point in the scene is measured by different pixels. Since these different pixels do not exactly have the same field of view on the scene, the spatial fluctuations of the polarization state will disturb the estimation. The objective of this thesis is to characterize the influence of the spatial fluctuations of the scene on the estimation and to propose a method to detect the areas of the image where these fluctuations significantly perturb the estimation.Chapter 1 begins by introducing the theoretical elements used in this thesis, including the Stokes formalism for describing polarization as it is used to describe polarimetric imaging systems. We also introduce the notions of estimation theory that will be needed.Chapter 2 then describes the different experimental setups used. The first experiment was used to calibrate the DoFP sensor. We then present two polarimetric imaging setups that allow us to obtain images that are not perturbed by the spatial fluctuations of the scene and that can therefore be used as a reference. These systems use successive acquisitions to perform the different analyses of the polarization state. This principle is called time division imaging (DoT for ``Division of Time'').In order to understand precisely the influence of the spatial fluctuations of the different polarimetric parameters on the estimation made from the DoFP sensor, as well as their relative importance, a theoretical model of the estimation errors due to the spatial fluctuations of the scene is developed in Chapter 3. This model is validated by observations made with the experimental setups mentioned above. We deduce that intensity variations are the source of the most important estimation errors.Rather than trying to correct these errors, we propose in Chapter 4 a method to obtain a map of the areas within the image where the estimation can be considered unreliable because of the spatial fluctuations of the scene. This method consists in detecting the areas of the image for which the fluctuations of the scene are more important than the noise level and thus lead to estimation errors that are more important than the uncertainty due to the noise. Finally, Chapter 5 deals with an application of the methods developed previously. We study a calibration method for a retarder placed in front of the DoFP camera. The presence of this retarder extends the analysis capabilities of the DoFP sensor. Indeed, the DoFP sensor alone can only analyze the linear polarization state. To analyze the circular component of the polarization, a retarder must be added in front of the camera. We show in this chapter that a lack of knowledge of the retarder's retardance can lead to a significant estimation bias. The calibration method described here makes it possible to estimate the retardance at the same time as the polarization state and thus to cancel this estimation bias. We show that the use of the error map developed in Chapter 4 allows us to perform this calibration in a reliable way even on a real scene with many spatial fluctuations.
