Holistic monitoring approach of occupant behavior analysis in residential buildings

Energy efficiency of buildings is a key for energy consumption and CO2 emissions reduction. The analysis of the factors affecting the energy consumption in buildings are considered as necessary for the assessment and optimization of the energy performance of buildings. Many research showed that the buildings’ technical, structural and environmental factors are not sufficient any more for a complete assessment of building energy performance. Indeed, recently, the occupant behavior has been identified as a major factor affecting the energy use in buildings, and the works presented throughout this dissertation demonstrated the necessity of considering the occupant behavior in all the building energy performance analysis. The aim of this PhD research is to analyze and assess the impact of occupant’s behavior on buildings energy consumption based on large scale in-situ monitoring and propose a methodology for a monitoring design guided procedure. To do so, three different groups of building (social housing, private building and smart building) has been deeply investigated and monitored. The occupant behavior has been characterized and the affecting drivers has been analyzed taking lighting use, electricity use, heating and thermostat use, and windows openings into account. Finally, and as a valorization of the occupant behavior analysis, a methodology based on a holistic approach was developed and proposed as a guideline for defining the main phases of designing, implementing, analyzing and valorizing the monitoring activity. This research is a part of a European project entitled “Holistic Energy and Architectural Retrofit Toolkit (HEART)”.
